In my prelim task, I vaguely learnt how to storyboard. At the time I did not realise the importance of creating a storyboard. It is hard because you have basic ideas in our head of what we want to do and portray, but sometimes it can be difficult to articulate this to other group members so you have to put your ideas down visually to help people understand your ideas. Storyboards are also fundamental in allowing your team to work efficiently on location without forgetting what to be filming and making sure you are being time efficient. A storyboard will clearly list what happens in the shot, what type of shot it is and how long for and any other comments needed for it.
For the final film I knew that we had to have a well planned, detailed storyboard to help us. It had to be done meticulously in order to achieve the best outcome, it wasn't scribbled rubbish illustration and basic camera terms as it would be unclear to group members and the director what was happening in each of the shots. I learnt that it needed to be more creative and imaginative ways for your group to see your ideas.
Prelim and Film Opening shot list and shot board
Like the difference between the storyboards created in the prelim and film opening the creation of shooting lists/boards enhances your knowledge of how to present the information with more precision and on a larger scale. A shoot board enables you to know exactly what you are shooting and when, this was very helpful in helping us to achieve a high level of organisation paramount in creating an interesting and successful piece of work.
Script.
I feel this was very important for us as we had a lot of dialogue. We didn't want the film to feel scripted so when using the script if it felt too forced we would change it and let it flow itself. We thought our script was mature and fit well with our genre. As a group we thought that it was best that we didn't have any dialogue in the opening to sound unnatural and bring it in half way through. It was important that the actresses learnt their lines so that when it comes to filming it provides a sense of realism to the film opening.
Production.
In terms of production we have learnt a lot from the beginning of media and our prelim task. We learnt a lot about camera work and we was already familiar with shots and the functions of the camera, therefore we wasted no time to uncertainty over equipment. We learnt basic filming rules required in order to create a successful film opening. The main lesson learnt was our time management in order to try and finish everything to our deadlines especially as our filming location wasn't at school. We had to make sure that we got as much filmed when we did as possible. We learnt how to work as a team despite the differences we had along the way and overcome difficult situations using great initiative which showed how we grew as a group along the way.
The major set back we had while filming was due to one our group members - Rory, who was also our main actor walked out during our filming process, which meant that we had to restart the whole filming process and i had to take over the main acting role as well as being the director despite have no acting experience. However the remaining group, myself, Lollie and Ella worked so hard to achieve the amazing result in which we are so proud. We have learnt to control our frustration due to the setback and also learnt how to deal with it in a mature way and listen to others opinions and take them into account in order to figure out what the best solution was to the problem.
Post Production.
For the group this was where the biggest technical development was made from all of us. As a group we hadn't had much experience using premiere and our knowledge of editorial skills were very basic and we felt that we wasn't capable of editing it too a good standard. I feel that I have learnt a lot with how to use Premier and I am confident when using it and the features it provides. We spent a lot of time playing around with it and developing the film. The transition from our prelim editing to this has been amazing and I think it has worked really well.
Below are both my MANIA final film opening, and my Prelim film. It shows the contrast between the two in terms of the skills we developed.
